and soon!

We just switched Dot to CLE math. We'd been using whatever workbooks I could pick up at the dollar store. I picked up 101, 102 and the teacher guide at HEAV last weekend and during the course of the past week she finished 13 of the 20 lessons in 101. Granted, the only new thing to her was the format (the main reason I started her in 101) and the intro to place value, which I probably could have done without the 101 LU. But looking through the TG for the next two LUs has me thinking that she's going to blow through them just as quickly.....

It probably has a little of the bright & shinny new about it. She may slow up a little just because it isn't as new and exciting anymore IYKWIM.

I am not familiar with CLE at all but I know with my dd and math, when we started, she worked through 2.5 grade levels last year and seemed to already know everything I was teaching her. She finally slowed down this spring. We took last summer off then finished up that grade in the fall.

I slowed her a bit this year so she could get a little more solid on multiplication/division facts, by just not doing math as often during the week...we filled her learning time with other things, and by taking a few side trips to play with Hands on Equations and Primary Challenge Math. She only completed 1.5 grade levels this year in her regular math books.

A new book always causes her to want to do that subject more as well so she always starts with a flurry of learning.

LOL That's probably why she did five lessons the first day. But the material for her really easy easy; I suspect I could have skipped 101 completely as there are only two lessons with new material in them. The 101 LU's memory facts are addition sums to five, which she's known for several years already.

Dot is the same way; I would not be surprised if she starts Sept. 2010 in the 3rd gr math. :tongue_smilie: I firmly believe that math MUST be done daily, even if it's just small amounts, and we school year-round, so she goes through the material really quickly.

I'm sure she will slow down, but if math is her thing, it might not be anytime soon. My dd flies through math, and we have ended up setting a strict limit of no more than 30 minutes per day, four days a week, and a month off in the summer just to keep her from going too far too fast. I'm not even sure that it's such a bad thing to end up far ahead in math, I just know that I'm not in a rush to get too far until she's a bit older:001_smile:She'll be 6 next month, and I am trying to stretch out Singapore PM 2B until September or October. The issue here is that she gets everything the first time I teach it -- what slows her down is that she has only memorized about half of the math facts that she needs to use to proceed with any speed, so much of that half hour daily is spent using a number line or skip counting as she works through problems.

I'm not so much annoyed or even concerned, it's just a matter of not having the money to buy the entire year all at once, and so we're buying them piecemeal. I suspect at her current rate she'll finish the 100 completely by Christmas.

Poor DH... he's got to pay for it all.....

We haven't slowed down so much as branched out. We added in Life of Fred recently and have been reading more math stories. We're still going through the Singapore books very quickly though. I bought the whole curriculum in January last year thinking I was set for the next 5 years. We're already halfway through 4A!

We generally school year round as well. Last summer was a bit different since we took a 6 week road trip from our home in NJ to CO and WY.

LOL That's what I'm afraid of! :tongue_smilie: Fortunately CLE is inexpensive, and MEP is free except for the printing.
