I have a 7 year old that is in the first grade. He has been reviewing Phonics Pathways and following in Spelling workout.
I have not seen any good come from this book and he certainly dislikes it. Can anyone tell me of a useful spelling curriculumn. DS dislikes school in general and seems to be an audio learner for the most part.

Well, my first thought is that you don't really need a spelling program in first grade. You could spend first and second grades doing copywork exclusively and then introduce more formal spelling in third grade. I use Simply Spelling--a spelling program that teaches through dictation.
As far as not liking school in general, are you spending lots of time reading out loud? Little boys in particular don't like being chained to a desk doing seatwork all day. You could try doing more things orally and let him move around some. For example, he can build legos while you read out loud. Ask him to narrate to be sure he's listening. Just a few thoughts. Other ladies will chime in with other suggestions, I'm sure.

My ds6 doesn't like SWO either. Nor does he like ETC. Busywork to him. He'd rather read or be read to or just play. Some of that will have to change, but right now...the advice I've gotten is similar...he's only 6! I know, your dc is 7, but same sort of thing in regards to spelling. Give it up for the remainder of the year and try a different approach next year. Simply Spelling does look good. I agree about the boys needing to run around more. If your ds is an auditory learner, books on tape, reading aloud while he plays w/ blocks, legos, K'nex, etc. or colors might work. If you really feel strongly about spelling...try spelling the SWO words into a tape recorder and having him listen to it. HTH

My 6 yo DD really likes Spellwell. I used it when I taught third grade at a classical school, and my kids there really liked it, too. I haven't met anyone who actually uses it in the homeschool world, but I like it. It gets at phonics in a sneaky (to the child) sort of way, and each day's very brief activity is a w/s, but in a game type of format. It is not onerous, by any means. Just a thought.
