We have very few options in my area, and I know there would be great interest in classical education here. How does one go about it? I am a scientist, not a business person, and I don't have the foggiest idea whether it's even realistic.

Google "New Classical Academy." It was started by home schooling moms and caters to home schoolers to an extent (especially to home school wannabe's). I believe they have information on their website about starting your own school. They now have 3 campuses in this area and they only opened their doors 2 years ago.

In California it's pretty easy, legally. It might not be so easy in your state.
It was *my* school, pretty much, so I was able to make all decisions regarding curriculum, teaching materials, schedules, everything.

I'm part of a group of parents doing this right now. We are using material from NAPC*IS (http://www.napcis.org/feasibility.html) along with advice from local private school administrators. I was brought on board after much of the feasibility groundwork had been laid, though, so I'm afraid I can't offer any real advice there.

I have a friend who's trying to do this right now in our town. The biggest problems she's running up against right now are all the requirements for buildings, such as hallway size, sprinkler systems, etc. She wants to be accredited, so she's trying to fulfill requirements that would allow for that......
