My dd (16) few months from 17 have scheduled to do Chemistry next year, BUT she is not done with Alg I, matter fact, she is stucked in some inequalities that she gets right after many trials, not smoothly at the first contact as I would like it to be.:001_unsure:

Can she still take Chemistry or she is not gonna make it without her Maths...by the way Geometry is another big woe with the proofs. Any idea which Geometry could she do?:crying:

She wants a career taking care of BIG cats, Biology is the route with a lot of Maths...how can I help her? She only have two more years. At this path, just getting was is required she'll be 20 when she finish! I think I do not mind but is it really so? Is it ok?:willy_nilly:

Material we are using:
VT Algebra - the entire package
ACE Algebra I
MUS Algebra I
Classmate Algebra I

ACE Geometry
Life of Fred Geometry
Euclids Elements
Classmate Geometry

In used right now?

ACE Algebra I with getting acquanted with VT way of doing things.

ACE Geometry and Classmate Geometry...working simultaneously.

I am so "blue", so disappointed. Could you help? Would you help?

Thanks in advance.

I know it might not look good, but no one has as little as an idea?

Why so many books? That in itself confuses me.

I agree why so many books for each subject?

What about sticking with one text like TT? Maybe a slower pace and visual will help with retaining.

To help with Chemistry, she could do Bridge Math, by Beginnings Publishing. It is about 6 weeks of study before Chemistry for those who haven't finished Algebra.

However! I hate to add another math to what seems to be math overload.

Just choose one Algebra for now, and worry about the Geometry when she's close to being done.

Do you have to do Chemistry? Does she have a few colleges picked? Son just finished freshman year of college. The science requirement was Biology and two sciences after that require biology as a prerequisite. We did Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (ugh), but Marine Science and Anatomy are also acceptable with Biology. Are you sure the Video Text isn't a good fit? It didn't work over here. Teaching Textbooks is a good suggestion. We had a tough time with the chemistry as well, hoping it will go better with next child...

I agree that that's a lot of Algebra books at once and then a lot of Geometry books. While we have extra Algebra 1 books for the occasional reference (usually bought used and cheap) dd is mainly doing one Algebra (Dolciani). We were doing Gelfand's, but she's going to finish that one later as it was too much for her with everything else she has to get done. She will do that one slowly to get the great theory etc from it.

Dd is going to do Conceptual Chemistry next year which doesn't require a lot of math. She'll be done Algebra 1, but I'm not sure how much Algebra she needs to know. She'll do the Chemistry Alive! lectures (they come with the newer editions of Conceptual Chemistry) and we have the Thinkwell Chem lectures.

It follows students for a year at the Exotic Animal Training and Management Program at California's Moorpark College. Moorpark is a community college and admission (if you meet the CC requirements) is by lottery. It is a matter of meeting the admissions requirements and then reapplying until you get in (at least, according to the book). It is easy to read. It might inspire her, if she hasn't read it before, and give her something concrete to aim at. Another good read is Don't Shoot the Dog. It's about training animals, written by Karen Pryor. It has directions on how to do it. It also is an easy read. I just read both for fun. They aren't textbooks or anything.

For those who wonder....my dd Does Not use all these books at the same time. The curr. she was working with what ACE and she got a lot of trouble with it and my hubby and I decided to get another curriculum and she chose Video Text, but after a couple of modules she got stuck again. To give her a break from it she went back to ACE and flow through it until now. When she finish with ACE she will have no other choice than VT to complete all her Algebra's req., 'cause I am not buying another Algebra curr. The rest of the books are for reference, different people explain the same concept in different ways, some is bound to "hit" and turn the light up. The same goes with Geometry.

Nan, I have not heard of those books BUT that college was the one I was planning to send her AFTER she completed at least an associate somewhere or at least on line. I have all their info, thanks though.

Karin, I will check on Conceptual Chem and will keep it in mind. We liked Thinkwell but they do not sell the DVDs by themself and have not find any for sale yet.

Thanks again to all, have a wonderful weekend.

look at MUS. I noticed you used it for Alg 1. The Geometry course is light in proofs and they aren't introduced until the last of the book. My dd used it and did well.
As for science if you use Apologia I don't think there would be a problem. The author more or less teaches them the math they need as they need it.

I bought the Thinkwell DVDs for computer used, so bought them by themselves. However, you don't have to have it it you have Conceptual Chem with the Chemistry Alive!
