It is taking us quite a while to wade through the ds's language assignment today.

Which is longer? day year

My 8yo circled "day."

Me: "Day? Are you sure?"

Him: "Of course! I'm on Venus today."

Which is colder? ice water

Him: "There's no ice on Venus!"

I know, deep down, that this is a good thing. Right?

Come on, share your brilliant child's attempts at prolonging their learning experience.

"Oh cool!! A student from Venus. Here is what I'd like you to do. You circle the answer as if you were from earth and then in the margins write how it is different on Venus. I'm so excited to learn all about your culture!"

LOL! Yes, it really is a good thing!! I'm impressed!

My ds was being tested at the local public school to see if he'd qualify for some special services. They asked him if the moon was in the sky. My ds said no! He said, "The sky means in the atmosphere and the moon isn't in our atmosphere." He was in first grade and the grader marked it wrong. Grrrr . .

Yes, this would have been a good response. Unfortunately I was horizontal on the couch this morning and not much in the mood for alternate answers. Fortunately I wasn't much in the mood for arguing with him either so his imagination stayed intact. :o

No recent brilliant attempts at prolonging learning, but today I had a brilliant attempt at prolonging tattling.

Kitten came in and tattled on her sister (her newest joy in life).

I said, "Are you tattling?"

She said, "No, I don't tattle. I just look for things I know she's not supposed to be doing, and then I tell you about it." This was said with a straight face.

(At least your story is something to be proud of!) ;-)

Jennifer, this reminds me of when my oldest was doing a reading assignment where he was supposed to circle all the items in a list that gave off light.

When I was grading his work with the teacher's key I noticed he had circled then erased "moon." The answer key had moon circled. Of course, the moon reflects light, so he was technically right. I'm sure a lot of graders would have marked him wrong.

When I was in college...COLLEGE...I very respectfully asked the prof. to explain why I was marked wrong on one of the homework questions. He opened the answer key and showed me the "correct" answer. It didn't make sense to me so I asked for an explanation. "Well, that's what the answer key says, so that is the correct answer!" No joke. Fortunately he wasn't around the next year (I got an A in the class, so overall it wasn't a big deal, but it still makes my skin crawl that he was teaching a college course).

I'd say that qualifies as language arts...re-defining words

Or maybe life skills...how to get out of sticky situations

During a recent visit with her cousins, K comes running in to where the grownups are chatting and, in that tone, declares, "Owen has been tattling." :D I was laughing so hard I couldn't even answer her. I still don't know if she's recognized the irony yet....
