I'm thinking surprise dinner out with closest friends(and spouses) of hers. But I need ideas for something with more purpose. She's a wonderful person, always giving of herself, and I really want her to feel special and honored. I would appreciate any ideas. TIA

That is so sweet. So no over the hill, everyone wearing black...lol. My moms friends did this for her:p can you gather info for a "this is your life" or have some friends write a tribute to her that can be put into a memory book.

Visit a stationary store and buy a couple of packs of blank RSVP cards. The kind you would find in a wedding invitation. Buy enough envelopes to go with the cards.
Have friends and family of the birthday girl write a sentence or two on each card. Something they love about her. Something about her that makes them laugh or smile. Something wonderful that she does for others. Something you appreciate about your friend.
When you have 50 cards, collect them all in a pretty box or basket and present them to your friend at the party.

I mentioned in this post (http://soliloquy-ct.blogspot.com/2007/12/joy-of-handwritten-letter.html) giving a similar gift to my mother. She treasures that box of notes.

This is silly - but -

Find every verse in the Bible that mentions 50. Print them all up, and present them to her!

(I did this to dh when he turned 40 - there are LOTS of those! - and taped them all around the house - EVERYWHERE! It was a good laugh!)

Our family has done this a couple of times for milestone birthdays. The gift-givers have as much fun as the recipient.

Have everyone bring something in the quantity of 50. The lower the budget the better. Some of the gifts were (in the quantity of the age):

colored paper clip made into a necklace,
Q-tips;
safety pins;
candies;
coins - fake and real;
lures;
crayons, etc.

The recipient has to guess the theme of the gifts. It's funny because they are opening this odd assortment of things and are clueless!

Another thought ... if you google "50 ways to," over 19 million results show up ... from "fail an exam" to "leave your lover" to "maim your brother." You could find a topic dear to your friend, google it, print it out then at the party see if you can name them all.

Or, find out what was going on in 1958. Have a mini-history lesson.
