My mother-n-law (former teacher) is gently pushing me to teach grammar/writing with my two dds (gr 1/2 next year). I am not in a hurry to introduce a program but I would like to know my options. Can anyone recommend a program? We are totally green in this subject area. Thanks!

We did copywork and Mad Libs Junior for 1 and 2.

I second FLL and WWE. They are very gentle and easy to use.

FLL done orally only worked well with my ds who learns well that way. I learned by trial and error that I don't like doing written grammar until about gr 3; I don't really see the point. Now, handswriting, copywork, etc, that can be helpful, of course, but I don't do a formal writing program in gr 1 or 2, either.

We're going to do FLL 1/2 in the fall. I had planned on also doing Writing with Ease, level 1, but after looking at it I think we will hold off on it. So we'll focus some more on handwriting. That's a big issue for us.

Another vote for FLL 1 & 2... I used it with my K/1st graders this year (well into reading at this point), with great success.

Granted, the K did mostly the memory work and answered things orally, his penmanship/copy skills are pretty rough -- but it was great.

We are using FLL and will start WWE in the Fall. Ariel likes FLL, and so far there is virtually no written work (for her) other than some copywork every third lesson or so.

:iagree: This is what I'm using this fall with my 5-year old 1st grader.

We'll be doing WWE (hopefully with our own selections) and grammar a la Montessori.

FLL, definitely! I have been using it with Becca and we're almost done with level 2. I'm astounded at everything she's learned and Sylvia has even picked up on the memorized helping verb and preposition chants!

I'll plug CLE instead. My DD is a workbook-lovin' child. She HATES OPG and SOTW. Just the mere sight of either is enough to reduce her to tears and screaming "I hate reading/history!" even though she truly enjoys both. After that experience I'm not willing to give FLL a try, we're going to go with what we know works for her. That's a workbook-based curriculum. She'll be 6 in October and will be doing the 100-level books.

We also use FLL. We don't do a formal writing program, just copywork and some dictation.

Thanks everyone! I went ahead and purchased FFL-excited to get started!
