Would this be an appropriate read-aloud for a 9 year old?

As a read aloud yes. As an independent reader only if he likes to read a lot. This is the only Henty book that we really enjoyed as most of them are war, war, war and he makes it look like the event in history would have not happened the way it did had it not been for the fictional character. We are just not Henty fans, but Cat of Bubastes was very good.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll just get it for myself and pre-read it. My son hates both war and Ancient Egypt. I'd like to find a read-aloud that he will enjoy from this time period. He thinks everything about Egypt is creepy and weird!!

Maybe he would enjoy The Golden Gobblet?

Oh and a cool book about deserts is 52 Days by Came.

we listen to it in the van when we are out and about. Captive audience! My ds9 has enjoyed it as has dd11 and I personally have REALLY enjoyed it!

My 9yo boy *loves* the Cat of Bubastes! He was just listening to the audio book in his workshop today. We've read it aloud and also own the audio by Jim Weiss. While Weiss is not *my* favorite "reader", my son loves, loves, loves it. Highly recommended!

My 8yo dd liked "The Cat of Bubastes" (we listened to the Greathall CDs). I'd give it a whirl. The characters may help Ancient Egypt seem less creepy and might humanize the whole period for him.
