We're going to visit my MIL next week and I'm looking for some fun/educational places to stop on the way with my 2 boys (6yo and 9yo). I'm going to try to drive all the way through but promised them we'd stop and do some fun stuff and some stretching on the way.
We already know about the Sternberg Museum in Hayes...if I have to go there one more time I think I'll have to poke my eyes out! Don't get me wrong, it is a nice museum but we've gone at least once every year for the past 8 years...I'd like some place new.
Thanks!

It's a bit south from I-70 (I think) but the Dillon Nature Center and Kansas Cosmosphere (both in Hutchinson) are well worth it.
We've also done the Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Wichita.
What about that 5-legged steer and the world's largest prairie dog they advertise on I-70 ;)?

Well, if you're going to do like JudoMom says and go as far south as Wichita, you may as well come see me:)
Staying closer to I-70 though, the one place I would not miss is The Garden of Eden in Lucas, KS (http://www.washburn.edu/cas/art/cyoho/archive/KStravel/GardenOfEden/). I've never been there, but I have wanted to visit it for so long now. Just reading about it on the internet is interesting, but I'd love to go see it in person.
Kanopolis State Park is not far from I-70 if you'd like a place to camp on your trip.

Actually, can you believe we drove totally off course to go there one time only to find an abandoned building! UGH! Very frustrating!

That looks great! And is also very reasonably priced while close to the highway. Now, I've just got to figure out how to time it so we get there between 1 and 4 in the afternoon.
Thanks so much!

About 8 or 9 years ago, when my younger daughter was your older child's age, we stopped in Colby, KS to see the Prairie Museum of Art and History. It was something different and interesting for us. Also, it provided a much needed diversion from all the bad weather and tornado warnings being issued all around us. At that time, the museum had an inside display area...I believe it was dolls, glassware/ceramics, old and new toys, etc.....and the outside was set up like a prairie village...sod house, church, school, etc. We enjoyed it.
