Has anyone had a 6th grader take the test? Will it still be effective. I didn't really know a lot about the test and Duke Tip what I have learned was learned on this board. My son qualifies and is currently 5th grade but the next time they test he will be in 6th grade so I am wondering if I should skip it or if it would still valuable for him. Any insight?

Kissy,
The same thing happened to me with my oldest. By the time I found out about it, it was a little late. You might send them an email and see if they do take scores from 6th graders just to be sure.
What I did was to have my DD take the SAT in 7th.
Another option for next year is to take the SCAT (grades 2 - 6) which could give your DS a score to qualify for Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY). Here's the link for that: http://cty.jhu.edu/ts/grades26.html

Some sixth graders are going to top out the Explore and not really get any information from it other than "that was easy" (lol...) -- you might consider the ACT instead -- similar format but a higher ceiling. CTD has 6th graders take the ACT, so it's not unheard of, but TIP doesn't start it until 7th.

My DS took the Explore test the Feb. of his 6th grade year. It was a good thing to do - he scored extremely well and the information on what he needed to learn was very valuable to us!

Is the Explore test the ACT Explore? If so my twins took this in 8th grade through the public school. From what I understand it is commonly given in 8/9th grade, then the ACT Plan test is given in 10th grade then the actual ACT in 11/12 grades.

You're right - the Explore is normed for 8th and 9th grades, but it's also used through several "talent search" programs for younger gifted kids, so you can find norms through them down to 3rd grade (and the ACT down to 6th). Those norms aren't based on national random samples -- just on each organization's own participants -- so they're not quite the same thing, but it is useful information in its own right.
