I'm using a desktop, pedestal base iMac. It's a 2003 (dinosaur!) with a newer hard drive (768 MB/OS X 10.3.9). I'm trying to figure out why certain cd's won't play on the cd drive. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Last week, I borrowed a Bob Dylan cd from the library, and it wouldn't play, but others borrowed would. I figured it was just the result of it being an old cd. But, today, I'm trying to play two BRAND NEW cd's by the same musician*. One cd will play, the other will not. I don't get it.

Is there anything I can check for in settings, cd speed, I'm clueless?

*For those who want to know, the musician's name is Natalie Zuckerman. She is an outstanding young musician who opened for another spectacular artist, Willy Porter, at a show we attended Saturday evening.

I would ask over a Apple Tech support (http://www.apple.com/support/). Deidre in GA recommends another great Mac forum, but I've lost the link.

It is the encryption on the CD put there by the publisher. Each media company "breaks" their products in a slightly different way in an attempt to keep you from copying the music. Basically they almost follow the standards, but not quite. If the cd drive is made to spec it will be able to compensate for most of the variations in standards but not all.

Sorry. I'm not very savvy on this stuff (which begs the question: Am I savvy on ANY stuff? :o). Why would the publisher's encryption be different between two cds by the same artist, and from what I can see, by the same publisher (Talisman Records BMI)?

I'll give that a whirl. I actually have a link to a decent Mac forum (http://forums.macosxhints.com/). I'm just such a creature of habit that I always seem to come here first, kwim? If you guys can't solve my dilemma, I KNOW I've got a real problem! :D
