for a 5 yr old science nut! I have thought about getting the Mudpies to Magnets book and building my own science kit, but I don't know how labor intensive that would be. I have also been looking at pre-made science kits. I would like something to cover a variety of earth and space science experiments, or possibly separate kits for each subject. The Little Professors kits from Academy of Science for Kids look good but it is hard to tell from the brochure. Does anyone have any suggestions?

We had good luck with the Science in a Nutshell kits--especially Rock Origins. At that age, we just answered the questions orally instead of writing in the workbook.

I LOVED using the book More Mudpies to Magnets when my kids were preschoolers. I had read somewhere that the second book was better organized than the first book. My sons loved it. Some of the projects are for very, very young children, but others could easily be upgraded to whatever level you need. It was not hard to get the materials--except for the project to Build Your Own Roller Coaster I needed a lot of paper towel tubes and toilet paper tubes. I got my Mom to save hers, and she got her book club to collect them so I had LOTS. Many happy memories.

Young Scientist Kits are very good. Some are better than others as far as interest, but all illuminate the concept well.

rainbow resource sells them.

Thanks for the input. I have discussed this here before, and everyone seems to like More Mudpies to Magnets. I am going to try to find it at the library so I can take a look before buying it. I may still decide to go with one of the lab kits if it doesn't have enough experiments related to earth/space.
