I totally understand. My oldest son was like this. Fortunately, his sister came along, and now she listens to the majority of his talking. Also, he began to make his toys talk to each other (imaginative play), and he did slow down.
Now, oddly enough he worries me because he will spend so much time in his room listening to audio books, or playing by himself.
He really doesn't spend much time doing that (maybe an hour a day) but it's just so different than him a year ago that it surprises me.
So my encouragement is: have another kid, get him into some hobbies he can do alone (audio books, legos, etc.), and teach him to have "room time" every day with lots of constructive ideas. Minimum 30 minutes so you can relax. Also for a break for you, try Reading rainbow and other educational DVD's per day. If you do half an hour of room time followed by half an hour of educational DVD's you build in a full hour of peace and quiet for yourself. The movie is the reward for doing well in room time.
