My MIL makes it and we all love it, but she makes it by taste and has never (and probably will never) figure out amounts for me. I just can't cook that way!

So it uses canned green beans, either 2 cans green or a can a green and a can of yellow. Sour cream, fresh chopped onion, and either vinegar or oil or maybe both. There may be something else that isn't coming to me.

It's a cold salad. You mix the other stuff and then fold in the green beans. She's German and she makes it with distinctly German dishes. Like goulash (that's not really German is it?). Anyway ... goulash, red cabbage, this bean salad and baby peas.

Anyone?

It's not something I've eaten or made but I did find these recipes through searching and they sound similar:

It sounds like Schnittbohnensalat, only this version doesn't have sour cream:

There are so many regional variations of typical German recipes, that maybe you could ask her if this or another one is similar, and add the sour cream.
