I was just wondering if this is something I should read up on first to ready myself for any questions my dc may have. It is a fictional account of British history right? I got that impression when it started talking about a mermaid.

As you get into solid historical periods, it will start to separate out myth and history more definitely.
A nice background text that is written at a middle school level (so you can read it out loud to your kids if they want to know more) is the Young Oxford History. (http://www.amazon.com/Young-Oxford-History-Britain-Ireland/dp/0199100357)
Best wishes
