My daughter is going into 9th grade and wants to study Latin (she did LC I and II in middle school). She has a chance to do Spanish I with her Tapestry of Grace co-op. I am wondering if two languages will confuse her or if it is worth the effort to do two since they are so different and the Spanish would be with a teacher (rather than independent study) and would have interaction with peers. Any thoughts?

Language with a teacher and peers is great, especially if it is a modern language. I think that if she is interested, that she can handle two languages at a time and may enjoy it. My ds loves languages and graduated with French, Spanish, Italian, and 3 years of Japanese on transcript. Multiple languages are quite doable and amy be the perfect thing for some kids. She'll probably gain a better understanding of both by studying them together.

My daughter did Latin 2 and French 1 this year and had no troubles with confusing them. Having a Latin background helps with learning other romance languages.

I don't think it should be confusing. I did Latin and French in high school. My sons are studying three languages each.

Originally I thought we would need to keep them separate in our daily schedule, but actually he hasn't had any trouble no matter how we run them. (That is to say, I get the rare "sum" instead of "soy" and vice versa, but it hasn't been a problem...) We were going to go for three this year (Russian) but trying to keep them apart was too hard and Russian lost out every time. When we go back to that I'll be running them together and not worrying about it.

We do Latin and Spanish concurrently. I am the one who gets confused - the girls handle it fine!

Thanks! You all make it sound doable--or at least worth a try!
