View Full Version : What veggies and fruits are in your house?

I am by no means the healthy police. I have been known to (cough cough) drive through. I will actually on occasion feed my children from the horrid "Blue Box of Death". I mix in peas first--that makes it healthy, right?

Anyhow, just got back from some shopping and I'm consistantly shocked by the amout of crap that people buy. Chips. Cookies. Candy. Big cases of soda. Not a veggie in sight. And have you ever seen those pictures of "What the world eats"--the ones where the American family is surrounded by pizza boxes and fast food bags?

So just to assure myself that the world is NOT coming to a culinary end--what veggies and fruit do you have in your house RIGHT NOW? Not what do you wish you have--but what do you actually have? Admittedly, I just shopped, so if you want to post on or after shopping day, that's fine. We'll count frozen--it is winter, after all. Here goes:

Fresh Veggies:
Asparagus
Artichokes
Tomatoes
Cucumbers (English)
Carrots (little peeled ones)
"Snack Packs" with organic Broccoli, Carrots, Tomatoes and ranch dip
Zucchini
Onions
Mushrooms
Bagged Mixed Salad Greens

Fresh Fruits:
Apples (Granny smith and Gala--some new, some left over)
Plums
Raspberries
Blueberries
Mango (one--from last shopping trip)
Pineapple
Orange (one--from last shopping trip)

Dried Fruits:
Prunes (excuse me, "Dried plums")
Raisins

Frozen Veggies:
several bags of green peas
several bags of "mixed veggies" or "stir fry veggies"
Brussels Sprouts (probably 10 or more bags--I love these things, even frozen)
Green beans

Hmmm.... just realized we need to get bananas, some iceberg lettuce and some whole broccoli. But we don't have those things now! The last bananas went on cereal this morning, and I threw out some old green onions and some old cabbage from the bottom of my bin. I hate that!

Here's what I have in the house:
Frozen: Green Beans, Peas, Broccoli, blueberries, strawberries, mango mixed fruit for smoothies, frozen zucchini that I used for soups & sauces, corn (frozen fresh from my parents farm)
Fresh Carrots, Romaine Lettuce (usually have green peppers but am out) onions, bananas, apples-Ida & Empire, red grapes, oranges, potatoes, garlic. I think that's about all. I like to buy fresh avocados also.

I don't buy any canned veggies.

Right now it is extremely tough for us to find fresh fruit. We get tired of eating apples and bananas that are available all year long. Also, this is a week after grocery shopping so it is somewhat depleted. We did try mangoes for the first time this week and really enjoyed them. In the summer time we eat a lot of strawberries, rhubarb, watermelon, pineapple and kiwi that just isn't available right now. Also, we tend to eat more salads in the summer months while we eat more soups in the winter. Summer veggies are tomatoes, onions, zuchinni, corn on the cob, green beans because we can either grow these fresh or get them fresh locally.

UGH, I wish I had more options than we do.

I just went shopping yesterday and the produce looked awful so I didn't want to buy to much and waste money because it went bad in the next couple days.

Here's what we got
No fresh veggies they go bad to quickly for us.

Frozen veggies
broccoli
cauliflower

We do green beans and corn canned, that's the only way my kids will eat them.

Frozen Fruit
strawberries
cherries

Fresh Fruit
Apples (granny smith and gala) My dd just brought me one this morning and said "mommy in school kids give apples to their favorite teacher so here's one for my favorite teacher" LOL

Grapes
Bananas
oranges
pluots ( I love these)

we also love to get fresh strawberries and raspberries, pineapple, and melons when they are more in season.

Given that I'm the vegan, you would think the tally at my house would be better. My only defense is that I've been too busy to keep up with the shopping in the last couple of months and, in fact, just got back from yet another 1600-mile round trip late last night.

With that said, here's what I have on hand:

Fresh Fruit
-bananas
-golden delicious apples
-cantaloupe
-strawberries
-kiwi

Fresh Veggies
-potatoes
-carrots
-lettuce
-bagged salad mix
-onions
-corn on the cob
-green onions
-yams

Frozen Fruit
-strawberries
-bananas

Frozen Veggies
-corn niblets

Canned and Packaged Stuff
-unsweetened applesauce
-canned pumpkin
-various types of canned tomatos

I think that's it right now.

due to the fact that we have only one major grocer (Safeway). The next closest grocer is 75 miles away.

I have in the fridge right now (and I shopped today)
broccoli
cauliflour
parsnips
carrots
some old celery
green onions
parsley
cilantro
mushrooms
bag of baby spinach
green onions
fuji apples
nectarines bought at great expense

and a bunch of bananas.

I suppose we should consider ourselves lucky that we can get what we can, as it is all brought in from elsewhere.

One nice thing about where we live is that there are no drive through restaurants, and we very rarely go out. During the winter there are only one or two restaurants that are even open so it absolutely forces me to cook at home, and we eat pretty healthy. Lucky for me my kids love vegs and fruits.

Dana, I think you're describing my nightmares! Yikes! ;)

It is a trade-off. We have clean air, tall mountains, superb views, sparkling clear spring water, and wonderful neighbors. In summer, the tourist trade flourishes and there are many festivals, restaurants, etc. In winter, the locals just hang in there and stick together.

I have had to learn to be so much more self sufficient. Now I bake bread almost every day, make my own pizza, and just about everything else. My dh makes it to Costco every other month or so to buy meats and other items which we freeze. I have also learned to cook Chinese food so we can have that also.

I can hardly believe that I am drooling over a tractor that I want to get this summer. I can't even believe that this is me, who was a city girl most of her life!

Okay, I'm not going to look, so I'm just guestimating:

We always have Romaine lettuce in the house, and probably baby carrots, too......

I always keep frozen, diced onions and minced garlic on hand for cooking.

I have frozen brussel sprouts, corn, edamame (always), and okra. Also some veggie mixes that I use in cooking oriental dishes, etc.

I think there's still a banana down there. We keep those on hand. I believe there are a few strawberries, and maybe even a cantaloupe if they haven't eaten it yet. I shop today, so we're at the bottom of our supplies right now......

We always keep dried fruits and nuts on hand. I'd say there are at least cranberries, raisins, apricots and dates down there right now, maybe more..... Oh, probably blueberries, too.....

And, hey, bad mom that I am, I keep a lot of canned things on hand. That's the way I grew up and I can't get it out of my system. I always have canned beans of multiple varieties, corn, carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. in my pantry.......

I don't have much of this in the house right now, we go grocery shopping on Thursday.

Frozen
Broccoli...this is a staple in our house!
Corn
Okra--only hubby eats
Vegetable Medely(califlower/carrots/squash/broccoli)

Fruits
1 can of crushed pineapples..for a dessert I was going to make
Banana's but they don't last long
Grapes--occasionally
Apples--occasionally, they cost to much..my kids eat a whole bag from Sam's in two days

Fresh Veggies
Potatoes
Carrots
Celery
Tomatoes
cucumbers
Lettuce
Onions

Canned
tomatoes for soups

There is no way I could afford to have that many fruits in the house, my budget would be blown way out of portion! My budget for 5 is $450 for the month, so I can't even think of buying that many fruits and veggies.

I don't buy a lot of chips, cookies and junk.
We might buy a couple of boxes of brownie and cookie mix but that is the limit.

I don't do many snack foods, frozen foods or prepackaged foods. I also cook a lot from scratch so a lot of the veggies I have are ingredients for meals. I spend around $600 a month on groceries though.

Fresh

And bagged lettuce and tomatoes, which I can usually manage just once a month.

Frozen
Strawberries, only because I have company
Cauliflower
Brussel Sprouts
Corn

Canned
Are beans a veggie?

Here's the flip side to this though: While I don't have many fruits and vegetables, but I don't have any chips, soda, boxed dinners, or cookies either. I just cannot afford to buy fresh fruits and veggies.

Well, all kinds of stuff for salads: carrots, broccoli, cucumbers, Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, celery, something else I'm sure.
We also have: bananas, apples, oranges, mango, something, something...
Canned: everything from collards to beets to beans.
Frozen: broccoli right now.

Eventhough we have all these veggies/fruits doesn't mean we eat them everyday. I know we could do better.

Fresh Fruit: blueberries & bananas.
Canned Fruit: Pineapple, mandarin oranges, peaches, fruit cocktail, applesauce (all natural)
Frozen Fruit: several bags of berries

Fresh Veggies: carrots

Frozen Veggies: 6 bags--1 for each night of dinner. Plus, green beans, spinach & peas

Canned veggies: potatoes, peas, mixed veggies, spinach, tomatoes, corn, green beans...

This is off the top of my head. Fresh fruit & veggies are expensive and go bad fast right now, except for the apples. Frozen last a lot longer :D

Well, today is usually my veggie-shopping day, but with severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings out, I decided not to venture out. We still have some stuff on hand, though:

Fresh veggies:
red leaf lettuce
green leaf lettuce
baby carrots
cucumber
roma tomatoes
onions
potatoes
celery hearts

Fresh fruit:
oranges
kiwi
apples

Frozen veggies:
sweet potato patties
corn

We also have a ton of dried beans, some sprouting seeds, and a couple cans of canned pineapple (canned pineapple is a weakness).

Also, we buy our fruits and veggies from a different place than we buy our other groceries, so we would look rather unhealthy or extremely healthy going through the grocery store line depending on where you saw us.

We have the following on hand currently:

Fruits
Apples (Braeburns, Fuji, or Galas usually. This week it's Braeburns)
Pears
Bananas
Blackberries (frozen from fresh picked)
Blueberries (frozen from fresh picked)
Pineapple (fresh)
Canned peaches
100% fruit juice
Dried papaya
Nuts, raisins and coconut

Vegetables
Broccoli
Lettuce (Romaine and Iceberg)
Onions
Garlic
Red Peppers
Mushrooms
Potatoes
Carrots
Sweet Potatoes
Yams
Green Beans (frozen)
Peas (frozen)
Tomatoes (canned)

We usually have more on hand, but its close to pay day and soon will be time for grocery shopping again. I like to shop for produce 3-4 times per month, plus we buy locally whenever possible and grow some of our own in the summer.

Our primary food is meat (chicken, turkey, pork, beef and fish), followed closely by fruits and vegetables. We add in a bit of grains, olive oil and butter and some dairy on the side. (I am currently wheat free too.)

Blessings,
Lucinda

Fresh:
apples
bananas that have turned the corner into banana-bread ingredients
romaine lettuce
carrots
green beans
onions
tomato
cilantro

Frozen:
corn
broccoli
berries (for smoothies)

I need to go grocery shopping soon, so we don't have a lot of veggies right now. Because we have rabbits, we always have some fresh stuff for them, plus whatever we eat.

Well, we go to the grocery store just about every other day, so we don't keep a lot.

Right now, we have:
spinach (leftover from last night's dinner - Italian spinach made from frozen)
1/2 head of green leaf lettuce
1 bag of baby carrots
1 bell pepper
1 cucumber
green onions

a few strawberries left from a 1 lb. box
about 1/4 lb. of grapes left from 1 lb.
8 bananas

frozen - a lot, I don't feel like counting it (sorry!) I know there's a bag of broccoli in there.

I need to go to the grocery store, unless we're going to have carrots & bananas for dinner!

I am by no means the healthy police. I have been known to (cough cough) drive through. I will actually on occasion feed my children from the horrid "Blue Box of Death". I mix in peas first--that makes it healthy, right?

That made me laugh since last night my dh fed my kids mac and cheese...but he thought a great idea would be to chop up salad and put it in there to get them to eat veggies. The 4 yr old was not impressed. But apparently he did eat a small bowl since Dad told him he wasn't getting anything else. He then was allowed to choose what he wanted and chose leftover white rice. :o

I'm pretty impressed with the fruits and veggies everyone has. Here we have:

Fresh: Apples, Oranges, Bananas, Grapes, Strawberries, Pineapple, Spinach, Carrots, Cucmber, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Mixed Salad Greens, Onions (Red and Yellow), Red Peppers, Green Peppers, Jalapeno Peppers

Dried: Blueberries, Mango, Cranberries, Raisins

Frozen: Corn, Peas, Blueberries
