Great ideas! Our bedrooms are upstairs, so the family closet wouldn't work too well with it being downstairs. We just replaced our living room furniture so I had to work with furniture I have already. I decided to make the back room "mine". I can shut the door when I need to & I can see/hear the boys playing outback easily. And turn the larger school area into a library/reading/game area.
My room has the art cabinet - it's right off the kitchen and with littles I like to help them get stuff out. I have all my scrapbooking stuff in there. A bin of next years school materials I'm using to write up my scope & sequence. And my teaching supplies, catalogs, etc.. I will keep my eye open for a wing back reading chair.
The other room is very open in the front (to the foyer, half the wall is an open stairs, and has a double window. This is where our old couch, coffe table, and HUGE comfy chaise are. In the middle of the long wall I have the computer - I can see this easily from many rooms to monitor and a dresser which houses our games and the globe & printer sit on top. Then the back area where my stuff was I moved our two tall bookcases to the far back wall and we have a dry erase board on the other end of that wall, the one wall has a window, the other has a corkboard with info, and then in the center I sat our former kitchen table, there is plenty of room to walk around it to the bookcase or computer, they can use this for schoolwork or to play games. Then in the corner I have a 3 drawer bin for my preschooler of his activities.
