Reporting back on our experiences with an Environmental Science class that my ds is taking at a small private university near us... well, the second exam was returned this week, and 25 out of 30 students failed it! The professor said he was discouraged (luckily my ds passed well enough!). Really I don't think the students take the studying and preparation seriously!

The professor allowed anyone who failed the test, to take it home and type it up with correct answers, and re-submit. My ds said one girl handed in the revised test but told her friend she wasn't staying for class-- I guess felt she didn't need to listen to the lectures! Amazing.

The work is not too much, it's just that at this particular school, the students don't take it seriously, I guess!

That's just staggering. I work at a small, private university (read: expensive), and I notice that some classes attract a certain "flavor" of student. So some classes seem to be filled with slackers and others don't. I wonder if kids think Environmental Science will be less challenging than, say Chemistry or Physics, so it attracts students who don't take their work seriously? I really have no idea, but am just throwing that out there as an option.

Good for your son, passing the test!

Thanks for the report.
