This is from the Chalkdust Alg 1-Chapter 3.4 (page 156)
The assignment is to find a ratio to compare the relative sizes. #24 is
Five and one half pints to 2 quarts.
OK-now my math brain (not a very good one) says that I need to find out how many pints there are in a quart. Then I need to multiply that by the original numbers, canceling out the pints/quarts so that I have a fraction left.
So
5.5 pints 1 quart 5.5
___ times ______ = ____ or 1.375
2 quarts 2 pints 4
The answer key shows the following:
5.5 pints 11 cups 11 or 1.375
______ = ______ = ___
2 quarts 8 cups 8
Now, I can see why the answer key said to change everything to cups. However, my answer worked too. My daughter has no idea why I did it that way. Frankly, I'm not sure why I did it either! -Weak chuckle- Can anyone explain to me exactly what I did so I can explain it to dd? I think that my way, in the end, is the better way to solve the problem, though I am not sure why.
