Just got home from having son evaluated at the university here

They evaluated his speech and then tested him for his reading issues. One of the test was CTOPP? , which he scored marginally below on a few and really below on 2 parts.

For the speech she said he has delayed articulation oh something? Drat I wish I could remember now! I will be getting a report next week, but I can't remember the words now. She doesn't think he has motor issues and he does not have apraxia. They are going to work with me so he can go to ST once/twice a week and I can work with him at home the rest.

For reading he has issues with recall and she felt there were other issues too, but she wants to see his vision eval before making a final judgement on that. His vision eval is next Thursday so she should have an answer not too soon after.

They are going to work with him on the reading issues and work with me, to show me how to help him, which is what I was praying for. I am to bring the materials I am using now for reading and they hope to use those but teach me to to use them better for him. We might have to switch programs, but that's fine too. What ever it takes.

I am so glad that I went today and feel like this is definitely the right step for him. I will update once I have the written report.

My 8 yr old son also has articulation issues( can't say 'l' clearly) and I am going to try to get him some help this summer. Actually, my last 3 have the same issues. I think the misprounciation from the 2nd one just worked its way down to the twins. Anyway, insurance has agreed on speech therapy so we will start in the summer.

Thankfully, we have no reading issues over here.

Sounds like you got a good eval!

On the CTOPP, find out when you go back if they did the real word subtests or the nonsense word subtests (or both). My dd did okay on the real word subtests, but she scored low on the same subtests when they used nonsense words. Her guessing skills camouflaged the extent of her decoding delays. With nonsense words, the child can't use inspired guesses to mask problems.

Many children with articulation problems move on to have difficulty learning to read. My dd was one of those.

Anyway, it's encouraging to be able to get professional help!
