Middle Ages Villages
Arie 1-2-01
Most people in the Middle Ages lived in villages.
The villages were controlled by the Lord of the Manor. Stray animals
were kept in a pound until their owners paid a fine to get them out.
The roofs of some houses were made of straw or reeds. This was called
thatch. All of the wheat in the village had to be taken to the village
mill. The land belonged to the Lord of the Manor and it was farmed
by villagers. They paid him by giving some food which they grew.
Black death was sometimes caused by rats or bats. Some sick sailors
from the East landed in an Italian port and the Black death disease
was very bad.
